Mechanical Workshop
Facilities >> Mechanical Workshop
To fulfill the stringent requirements in astronomical and atmospheric instrumentation a fairly well equipped mechanical section were established.Mechanical section is actively involved in design , development, and maintenance of various instrument associated with astronomical and atmospheric research. Section is also carries out infrastructure development and maintenance of institute campus.
ARIES has fairly well equipped mechanical ,workshop contains following machines:
- Battala Lathe
- Shimoga Kirlosker Lathe
- Weller Lathe
- Shaper
- Milling machine
- Surface Grinder
- Pedestal Grinder
- Micro Drill
- Tool & Cutter Grinder
- Bench Lathe
- Sampat Drill
- Radial Drill machine
- Wolf Grinder
- Power Saw
- Wood Planer
- Wood Slitting
Achievements
- The major achievements of the workshops are in house development of dome for 15cm telescope , roll off roofs for the Baker-Nunn camera, the 25cm and 52cm telescope houses complete mounting along with the drive assembly of the 56cm telescope.
- In house development of components of the horizontal Solar telescope and the associated double pass spectrograph, a Cassegrain spectrograph. H-alpha unit and flare patrol spectrograph, housing for a number of photometers including an offset photometer,an observing platform for the 104cm telescope, three optical grinding and polishing machines, a glass slitting machine 30cm and 60cm vacuum aluminizing units, many components of the total solar eclipse expeditions.
- The mechanical shop has played a major role during site survey programmes for a large telescope.
- A 25cm telescope made in the institute was installed in the eighties at Devasthal for seeing measurements. Microthermal sensor towers were installed near the 52cm and 38cm telescopes houses at Devasthal.
