Advt. for Project Scientist (Three Positions, On a contract basis)
Aryabhatta Research Institute of observational sciencES (ARIES) invites Online- application for the post of Project Scientist for 3.6m Devasthal optical telescope (DOT) instrumentation projects.
Background:
3.6m DOT is the biggest national facility where observers from India and abroad can apply, compete, and observe their science cases. To cater to the observation demands of astronomers and boost the scientific output of the 3.6 m DOT, we are projecting a pool of experienced contractual staff to participate in developing future instruments for DOT and streamline the telescope's and related instruments’ operations, maintenance, and data support.
Objectives of the position:
- Development and commissioning of the future instruments for 3.6 m DOT
- Data quality verification and providing science-ready data to the observers.
- Data logging and archiving.
- Developing and updating manuals.
- Implement novel data analysis tools, including backend and frontend development of web pages, pipelines, databases, and web applications (GUI, etc) for the 3.6m DOT and related instruments.
- Participation in the observatory's science cases and publication through the 3.6m DOT facility.
- Supporting the night-time observations of the astronomers with a future goal of running this facility in service mode for the outstation observers as and when required.
- Organizing workshops/tutorials related to 3.6 m DOT and its back-end instruments.
- Involvement in the maintenance/upgradation of the 3.6m DOT and related instruments.
- Work synergistically with the engineering and scientific team of 3.6m DOT to develop and implement web applications and tools on the 3.6m DOT webpage.
- Involvement in the calibration, commission, and testing of the back-end instruments.
- Software operations, maintenance, and development for the evolution of the system and tools for the proposal to DTAC.
- Support 3.6m DOT team activities, including reports, conferences, public outreach, sciences, and training activities.
- Involvement in the maintenance/upgrade of the 3.6 m DOT along with instruments and other sub-systems (weather station, dome control, all-sky monitoring system, etc).
Number of Positions:
Minimum three (The number of positions in each scientific or engineering cadre is flexible and will depend on the number of suitable applicants and their expertise).

- Desirables:
- Experience of observation with world-class observatories.
- Proven record of publication of the observational data.
- Skill sets for data reduction and pipelining.
- Experience in using Python Django development.
- MySQL/PostgreSQL Database, SQL programming.
- Content Management System.
- Setup Python virtual environment & install packages as per the requirement
- Website design using HTML, CSS, Javascript, and bootstrap.
- Knowledge of Java Enterprise technologies, specifically JSF (Java Server Faccs) and JPA (Java Persistence API).
- Basic Knowledge of Application servers, e.g., Glassfish, Payara, etc. Knowledge of Linux system administration and shell scripting.
- Tenure:Initially for the period of One (01) year with an option to extend subject to the satisfying performance
- Recruitment and Posting :The selected candidate will be recruited by ARIES and will be posted at Devasthal.
