National Science Day
28 February is annually celebrated as National Science Day in India, commemorating the discovery of 'Raman Effect' by Sir C. V. Raman in 1928. He was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for the discovery in 1930. The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) requested the then Government of India in 1986 to designate 28 February as the National Science Day. The proposal was accepted and the day has been declared National Science Day since then. Every year a different theme is selected for the event.
National Science Day 2022
The theme for National Science Day 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future’. As the country celebrates the 75th year of India’s independence: Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, a science showcase called Vigyan Sarvatra Pujyate (science & technology is revered all over) is being celebrated all over the country. ARIES is also organising a week long celebration of the National Science Day during February 22-28, 2022 as a part of "Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav" commemoration at ARIES. It will include talks, discussions and many online and in-person competitions for students and general public, the details of which are given below. Winners will be announced on 28 February. There are many exciting prizes to be won!

Slogan Writing Competition (For class 6-8 students only) on 23 February 2022
The themes for slogan writing competition will be given on the spot. The themes will be science and technology related. Other rules will be explained on the spot. School teachers are requested to select 5-7 students of class 6-8 from their school and come to ARIES at 10:30 am on 23 February 2022. Please note that no travel arrangement can be provided for this and you are expected to come on your own. Extempore Speech Competition (For class 9-10 & 11-12 students only) on 28 February 2022
The themes for Extempore Speech Competition are given below. During the competition the students will be given any one theme by random selection to speak for 2-3 minutes. There are 2 separate categories in this, class 9-10 and class 11-12. School teachers are requested to select 5-7 students of class 9-10 and class 11-12 from their school and come to ARIES at 10:30 am on 28 February 2022. Please note that no travel arrangement can be provided for this and you are expected to come on your own. The themes for the painting competition are given below. School teachers/parents are requested to explain the themes to their students, collect all the paintings from the students, scan or photograph them in good resolution and upload them to file sharing services such as Google drive etc. (with viewing access to anyone with link) and then submit them through the submission form (given below the themes) by providing all the relevant details by 11:59 pm on Friday, 25 February 2022. No submissions will be accepted February 26 onward.

Science Video Making Competition (For class 9-10 & class 11-12 students only)
There are 2 separate categories in this, class 9-10 and class 11-12. Students are required to make 2-3 minute long videos in which they are seen conducting a science experiment from their syllabus. It should be accompanied by explanation in the student's own voice. Alternatively, the video can also be explanation of any concept in Astronomy or Atmospheric Science with a short slide show/visuals made by the student with their own voice. Please mention your full name, class, school name and city in the beginning of the video. The final videos can be uploaded to file sharing service such as Google drive, YouTube, Vimeo etc. (with viewing access to anyone with link). After uploading the video please submit your entry through the submission form (link given below) by providing all the relevant details. The form can also be submitted by school teachers or parents of the students. Please submit your entry by 11:59 pm on Friday, 25 February 2022. No submissions will be accepted February 26 onward.

If you yourself have done any astrophotography on any of the themes given below in the last 1 year, then submit your original images (in JPG or PNG format) with all the relevant details by 11:59 pm on Friday, 25 February 2022. No submissions will be accepted February 26 onward.
The themes for the competition are:
- Nightscape - Night sky with clear astronomy related features and landscape
- Deep sky objects
- Cometary/Planetary photography
Please note that though you may submit one entry in each theme (so maximum 3 entries), but one person can get only 1 prize. For example, if the same person's entries are good enough for 2nd and 3rd position during evaluation, then that person will only get 2nd prize and 3rd prize will go to a different person.
