Accomplishing tasks within a specified time frame often seems demanding, especially when dealing with uncertain systems. Physical systems face significant challenges in achieving convergence in arbitrary time intervals. However, theoretical possibilities exist, and with sufficiently flexible physical systems, it becomes conceivable to achieve convergence within arbitrary time frames in a free-will manner.

This talk introduces the concept of free-will arbitrary time convergent controllers, a newly developed approach that achieves convergence of system states to an equilibrium point within a user-defined arbitrary time, independent of system parameters and external factors. This novel approach sets itself apart from existing fixed time control algorithms, which offer stabilization only at selected predefined times and within certain constraints.

The primary objective of this talk is to explore the features of the free-will arbitrary time convergent controllers. It will delve into the theoretical developments underlying this technique and also highlight its applications in the design of differentiators and observers.

Shyam Kamal earned his Bachelor's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Gurukula Kangri Vishwavidyalaya Haridwar, Uttrakhand, India in 2009. He went on to complete his Ph.D. in Systems and Control Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India in 2014. During 2015 to 2016, he served as a Project Assistant Professor at the Department of Systems Design and Informatics, Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan. Currently, he holds the position of Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi, India. He also serves as the Coordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre at the same institute.

Dr. Kamal has a remarkable publication record, with two books, four book chapters, and 120 journal articles and conference papers to his name. His research interests revolve around nonlinear control and its applications, with a particular focus on fractional-order systems, contraction analysis, discrete and continuous higher-order sliding mode control, and multi-agent systems. His exceptional work earned him the Excellence Awards in the Ph.D. thesis category from IIT Bombay in 2015 for his thesis titled "Sliding Mode Control of Fractional-order Systems." In 2019, he was honored with the INAE Young Engineer Award for his research contributions. He is currently an INAE Young Associate.

Dr. Kamal has also received recognition through honorary appointments as a Visiting Professor at RMIT Melbourne, Australia in July 2017November 2019, and December 2019. Furthermore, he held the position of Visiting Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, China in August 2019. These appointments highlight his expertise and international collaborations in the field of control engineering.
